Timbers
All the major timbers used are native to Australia and include some of the world’s most beautiful woods. Most of the pieces are crafted from solid timber, with high quality veneers used for stability or where figured woods are a feature. This page illustrates the most commonly used woods in the collection.
Blackwood
Blackwood grows throughout Tasmania particularly in swamps and river areas. It is a stunning timber available in a variety of colours from light golden brown to deep brown. The grain can be straight or wavy. It is easily worked and is very stable. In the collection it is used in its solid form and also in high quality veneers which feature on trays and table tops. Blackwood is an easy tree to grow and is in plentiful and sustainable supply.
Burl Myrtle
Myrtle is found in the wet forests of Tasmania, where it regenerates continuously in the moist and sheltered conditions. However, its susceptibility to attack from insects and fungus make it unsuitable for plantation growth and future supplies will come from selective harvesting of forests grown on long rotations. The striking, rich, red and brown tones and vibrant colour make it a highly prized wood by furniture makers in its solid and veneer form. A number of items in this collection make stunning use of figured myrtle veneers including burl myrtle.

Huon Pine
Huon Pine grows in the south-western part of Tasmania along river banks, shores and swamps. It is a rich golden timber producing extremely attractive and sought after timber and veneers. It is a slow growing tree and in order to ensure sustainability, the supply of Huon Pine is carefully nurtured and controlled.
Sassafras
Sassafras grows throughout Tasmania as an aromatic evergreen tree. Sassafras will always be accessible to the furniture industry along with other forest produce. It has the most variable colouring of any Tasmanian timber. White Sassafras is a pale creamy grey to white timber. However, if it is infected with a fungus, it produces the striking Blackheart Sassafras. Blackheart can be streaked with brown, black or green. It is highly prized and decorative.
